I originally bought the Sigma Merrill as a potential specialist monochrome camera.

The B&W version of Ossett war memorial confirmed the choice, with the foveon sensor giving such rich tone.

The Sigma Quattro DP2 shot taken 6 months later looks pretty special too. Again great richness of tone.

But for me the Sigma Merrill DP3 shot – taken together with the Quattro in the same lighting conditions – just shades it. Just a greater range of tones especial in the shadow areas.
But let’s face it, you couldn’t complain about any! The Foveon sensor, both in the old guise and the new, is just pretty special in monochrome mode.
