If one artist’s work represents the landscape of Upper Swaledale at its moody best, it’s the oil on cork paintings of James Wheeler.

It’s what I see as I set off up the Pennine Way track leading to Great Shunner when the weather is at its most atmospheric. It’s what I pass driving across Birkdale Common, or over Buttertubs.

We’ve sold Jame’s prints since we arrived 2 years ago, and they’re superb reproductions, but now we have the originals you can see the texture of the paint, and of the cork, and it adds a different dimension.

The originals are hung in our cafe gallery; how long they’ll hang around is anyone’s guess.

We can’t show all Jame’s work on our website, so what better idea is there than to visit us in superb Upper Swaledale, and afterwards have a drink and bite to eat in the Farmer’s Arms …
