The Lonely Mountain – Buachaille Etive Mor

Head down against the wind and rain … mist obscuring the landscape  … cloud lifts to reveal a reflection …

Setting off in mist and rain across Rannoch Moor the bleakness of the day promised little chance for photography. Not for the first time I wondered why I had the weight of the camera in my bag. But heading home, towards the bar at the Kings House, the clouds slowly lifted to reveal Buachaille Etive Mor ahead. A chance encounter with a small pool created a unique view of this classic scene.

As a huge Tolkien fan, when I look at this picture I’m with Bilbo and the dwarves at the end of the Long Lake, setting out on the final leg of their journey, wondering what the mountain will have in store. Smaugh sleeps inside!

Buachaille Etive Mor has been shot thousands of times and it’s a beautiful hill to be sure. The classic shot is with the waterfall or river in front. I searched for the waterfall and took the photo but why repeat what others have already done? Walk away from the crowd and try to find a new perspective. Experiment! Try to be original. I don’t know whether anyone else has taken the same composition but I’ve not seen it if they have.
