Open Door on a Dark Night

An open door on a dark night; a portal to a different world.

I just loved the way the opened double doors of the villa framed elements of the room inside, creating a picture all of its own.

Shooting Notes

Top. Sigma DP1 Merrill for 8 seconds, ISO 100 at f11. Post processed in SPP and Lightroom. Reds needed to desaturated to correct the colour.

Bottom: Sony RX1 for 30 seconds, ISO 100 at f9. Post processed in Lightroom. Colours were just about right straight out of the can.

Andalusian Light Show

Last night Andalusia provided a spectacular send off to our week in the Sun, lighting up the vineyard and the distant mountains beyond.

Shooting Notes

I’ve not taken lighting strikes before and this seemed too good an opportunity to miss, so we stood out in the rain at 1am and continuously pressed the shutter hoping to catch some electrical action.

Shutter speed was set to 30 seconds, ISO to 1000, aperture to f8, and manual focus just below infinity; then lots of post processing in Lightroom!

Puente Nuevo, Ronda – Sigma DP1 Merrill

The Puente Nuevo, Ronda. A classic scene, photographed countless time, but still the view that drew us to Andalusia and to Ronda itself this year.

In the camera bag for the trip was a DP1 and DP3 Merrill, plus the Sony RX1. The DP1 Merrill has turned out to be the camera of choice. Its 28mm lens just seems to fit the dramatic landscapes that surround us, and in the Andalusian light the Foveon sensor creates that unique look that anyone lucky enough to stumble on the Merrill, and with the patience to wield it, knows and loves.

Sierra de Grazalema Pass – Sigma DP1 Merrill

Feel the flow of the road as you head over the pass, but watch out for oncoming lorries!

The Sigma DP1 Merrill is really a joy to use in Andalusian light. No tripod needed, just point at the scenery, use the histogram to protect the highlights, and it’s in the bag. In the murk of the UK the camera is a cracker but there’s no denying that Andalusia is its natural habitat. I just wish I’d brought a viewfinder!
