Emley Moor Sunset – Sigma DP3 Merrill

When I see Emley Moor Mast, I know I’m nearly home.

At 330 metres tall it’s taller than London’s Shard; sitting on top of the Moor it’s even higher. On a night like to tonight, much more spectacular.

Top. Sigma DP1 Merrill for 8 seconds, ISO 100 at f11. Post processed in SPP and Lightroom. Reds needed to desaturated to correct the colour.

Bottom: Sony RX1 for 30 seconds, ISO 100 at f9. Post processed in Lightroom. Colours were just about right straight out of the can.

Puente Nuevo, Ronda – Sigma DP1 Merrill

The Puente Nuevo, Ronda. A classic scene, photographed countless time, but still the view that drew us to Andalusia and to Ronda itself this year.

In the camera bag for the trip was a DP1 and DP3 Merrill, plus the Sony RX1. The DP1 Merrill has turned out to be the camera of choice. Its 28mm lens just seems to fit the dramatic landscapes that surround us, and in the Andalusian light the Foveon sensor creates that unique look that anyone lucky enough to stumble on the Merrill, and with the patience to wield it, knows and loves.

The Sigma DP1 Merrill is really a joy to use in Andalusian light. No tripod needed, just point at the scenery, use the histogram to protect the highlights, and it’s in the bag. In the murk of the UK the camera is a cracker but there’s no denying that Andalusia is its natural habitat. I just wish I’d brought a viewfinder!

Cloudscapes (Leeds RERF Part 7) – Sigma Merrill

Ok, lets not kid ourselves, I’m bored with the RERF, you’re bored with the RERF, the people building it are probably sick to death of the place, so why the heck I’m writing yet another RERF related blog post I’ve no blinking idea, let alone why I went back in the first (or more like seventh) place.

So avoid looking at the RERF; pretend its not there; think of it as just a bit of foreground candy for the cloudscapes that hang over it; and marvel at how the Foveon sensor in the Sigma Merrill renders them.

Owl | Sony RX1 | http://www.richardjwalls.com

A few days ago I snapped away at the owl using the Sony RX1 and the Sigma DP3. The result, for me, is a great example of the strengths of both cameras.

Having to get up close with the RX1 combined with f2.0 equals really shallow DoF,  and I love the the creamy background.

Owl | Sigma DP3 Merrill | www.richardjwalls.com
Owl | Sigma DP3 Merrill | http://www.richardjwalls.com

The Sigma on the other hand, taken a few steps back and at f2.8 … well could you ask for more resolution? … but the out of focus areas are for me too harsh.

So there you have it, two different cameras, two different sensors, two different images = one slightly bigger camera bag …

… and if you’re not interested in the cameras,  at least there’s a nice picture of an owl to look at 🙂

Two Buildings

Foreground, background; blue, green; traditional, contemporary; blue collar, white collar; industrial, service sector; commercial, residential … two buildings, many perspectives.

As other parts of industrial West Yorkshire wane, Leeds just seems to roll with the times; a city in constant transition.

When I processed this off the cuff shot of the Indigo Blue building it was the green dome of the Alf Cooke Printworks that caught my eye; one more part of the traditional Victorian Leeds fading into the background of a regenerating new Leeds.  A few months later I turned the tables with the green dome now dominating Indigo Blue.  The Printworks lives on as part the Leeds College Campus.

As the scenes below show, old and new Leeds are blending together creating a contemporary modern city with a traditional Victorian heart.

Mountains in the City

It’s many long miles and multiple hours to the nearest hills of significance; a plane trip to reach Swiss alpine heights, hanging valleys and high passes; and half a world away to stand in Nepal or Tibet, to gaze at Everest; but only 15 minutes to find man made mountains and river valley’s in the City, complete with prayer flags!

The Build Continues – Leeds RERF Part 6

It was back in November when I first discovered the RERF and used it to review the Quattro DP1.

https://richardjwallsblog.wordpress.com/2014/11/16/sigma-quattro-dp1-comparison-1-the-rerf-cross-green-leeds/

Six months later my mission to chart the build continues; though with it’s innards mostly hidden behind plastic and metal, its fascination is diminishing and my enthusiasm is waning.

Still to me it’s unique shape and structure continues to bring to some mind pumped up airfix model, and to their credit and my shame, progress on the construction is faster than than my stalled attempt to glue together an Eduard Albatros DIII kit.

Quiet Contemplation

At the head of the Bohinj valley is the Savica waterfall.

When we reached it on a late March afternoon it was deserted. Confronted with a locked iron gate blocking the decent to its foot , we took the path of least resistance, climbed around and over the fences, and headed down to the waters edge.

I scrambled around, messing with tripods and searching for angles. Sam settled instead for a place for quiet contemplation. The two came together.

After 30 minutes we climbed back around the iron gate and set of down the hill; unlocked the car; found Harry where we left him; drove back to the apartment; then headed out to Ema’s for the worlds biggest pizza.

Shoreline

It’s the end of March. Skiers back home in the flat lands; sun seekers remain deep in hibernation.

Bars, shops, restaurants are empty. Holiday homes deserted. Tractors outnumber cars.

Lake Bohinj’s shoreline is at peace, tranquel, undisturbed; perfect.

Birdseye View of Bohinj with the Sigma DP3 Merrill

A couple of weeks ago I bought a drone – the latest big thing – at the camera show in Birmingham. A two hour flight and one hour drive to Bohinj, in Slovenia, later I securely attached the Sigma DP3 Merrill to the drone ship,  powered her up, and set her off in the general direction of up.  At a height of one thousand metres, avoiding golden eagles and military jets, the crux of the flight, a careful manoeuvre to dock the Sigma with the Mefroto tripod – no point taking a chance with camera shake – and then rotate in 3D space to get into position.  One click of the wireless, fly by wire, remote shutter and job done, the only thing left was to get her home safely!

An Evening Out with the Sigma Merrill – Leeds RERF Part 5

With the nights growing lighter and the RERF inner workings quickly being clad in wood and plastic, it was time take time out and capture it glowing the in the twilight, lit by street lamps and internal lights. I’d not used the Merrill’s before for night time shooting so was interested in their capability, and in general I’m happy with the results though I need to work out how better to control glare.  Shots were taken with 2 – 5 second exposures @ ISO100. As always the Merrills were paired with a tripod. The photos at the end were taken earlier in the morning.

Hill of the Dragon | Sigma DP1 Merrill

Leaden skys hang over Pendragon Castle, Mallerstang, in Cumberland, legendary home of Uther Pendragon, father of King Arthur.

Pendragon Castle, Cumberland | Sigma DP1 Merrill | http://www.richardjwalls.com

Standing in the remote valley of Mallerstang, Pendragon Castle, built in the 12th Century, is a thing of myth and legend.  Uther Pendragon reputably built the original castle in the 5th century on the site of an old Roman signalling post. Leading the Cymric people he fought against the Saxons in the West of Britain until they lay siege to the castle and killed Uther and his followers by poisoning the well. But, with the help of Merlin, he had already given rise to Britain’s greatest legend, King Arthur.

Alone in Mallerstang, snow falling, dusk setting in, the old legends feel close at hand.

The NEC Photography Show – One Year On

With the 2015 Photography Show just around the corner it’s time for a quick retrospective.

This time last year I’d Ebayed my D800 and collection of heavy Nikon glass I’d built up over the years. Photography had ceased to be fun; the lenses were too heavy to drag around; the high resolution sensor was, in my hands, over sensitive to camera shake; and the results, to my eye, lacked a certain magic compared with the superb D700. Like so many I’d fallen into the pixel peeper trap of chasing resolution and the lure of a  traditional brand.

Now I wanted a small, light solution, that promised the same quality. With some trepidation I entered into the world of mirrorless; discovered the FF Sony RX1; luckily spotted one on Ebay; and immediately did the deal.

Stickle Ghyll Beck Study | Sony RX1 | www.richardjwalls.com
Stickle Ghyll Beck Study | Sony RX1 | http://www.richardjwalls.com

The RX1 covers just about every base. I love the constraint of a single focal length; the operation is a superb ergonomic mix of modern and traditional; the bokeh is smooth and creamy; the resolution seems the equal of the D800; wide open the images are awesome; and I can stick it all this in an (admittedly large) jacket pocket! Camera bliss.

But, as I headed to the inaugural 2014 Photography show, I still had some cash left over from the D800 fire sale.

Without lenses to buy my interest had turned to sensors and the different looks they might produce, just like different film types in the old days. The Foveon sensor had intrigued me for a while but it was Fuji’s xtrans technology packaged up in the newly released, retro styled, X-T1 that caught my eye. External controls, weather sealed, compact, great EVF, the lack of an optical low-pass filter; it looked perfect. The X-T1 was my target …

Blackburn Mercury Monoplane | Sigma DP1 Merrill | www.richardjwalls.com
Blackburn Mercury Monoplane | Sigma DP1 Merrill | http://www.richardjwalls.com

… And it was the X-T1 that I bought … but still having a little cash left over I headed toward the Sigma stand and discovered, right next door,  a DP3 Merrill selling for £300.

Recycling and Energy Recovery Facility, Leeds | Sigma DP3 Merrill | www.richardjwalls.com
Recycling and Energy Recovery Facility, Leeds | Sigma DP3 Merrill | http://www.richardjwalls.com

Over a cup of tea I contemplated my purchases. I was pretty pleased with the XT-1 but was thrilled with the DP3. I couldn’t believe my luck. I’d bought a DP1 Merrill for £650 a few months before only for it to be stolen on its first serious outing to Slovenia.  But the few test shots I’d managed to take in the week before looked stunning. Now, four months later, I’d picked up a DP3 Merrill for less than half the price. I’d almost forgotten I’d got the X-T1. I recall trying to persuade random people to get on over to the Sigma stand and pick up the bargain of a lifetime. Most thought I was mad.

Field Barn, Langdale Valley | www.richardjwalls.com | Sigma Merrill DP3
Field Barn, Langdale Valley | http://www.richardjwalls.com | Sigma Merrill DP3

The rest, as they say, is history. The XT-1, good though it was, couldn’t come close to the Sony in quality or versatility (I shouldn’t have expected it to), and the Sigma’s IQ and unique Foveon look simply blew me away. Both very different cameras, both unique propositions, both excelled at what they were designed to do. The XT-1 offered no original look, and no specialist purpose; there was no room on the shelf and within two weeks it had been consigned to Ebay. I think I lost £100 on the deal.

As I plan my trip to the 2015 show it feels like I’m going full circle. I still own the Sony and DP3 Merrill, and have now replaced the stolen DP1 Merrill, but now my attention is fixed on the DP Merrill’s big brother, the SD1, and pairing it with a couple of decent lenses.

Going Home | Sigma Merrill DP3 | www.richardjwalls.com
Going Home | Sigma Merrill DP3 | http://www.richardjwalls.com

Yes I know that over the past 12 months a hundred superb new cameras have been launched; each leap frogging the last with technological innovations; each offering ever higher resolution and ISO; each in ever smaller bodies; but each, sadly, much of a muchness in terms of IQ and look (I’ll exclude the Sony A7S from this statement as it is one camera that truly bucks the trend).

Tin Barn | Sigma DP3 Merrill | www.richardjwalls.com
Tin Barn | Sigma DP3 Merrill | http://www.richardjwalls.com

In this company an SD1 at £800 (body only); a Merrill sensor wrapped in a weather sealed magnesium alloy body; seems like a bit of a bargain!

I know a Quattro armed version can’t be far away, and a FF version must be on the cards and what a camera that would be, but the little bit of Merrill magic is just two hard to resist!

Any thoughts on lenses to pair the SD1 with would be much appreciated!!
